Motocross isn’t a sport for the faint of heart. It’s listed with sky diving and scuba diving with sharks as an extreme sport. Participating in an extreme sport comes with a lot of risk. Lessen your odds of injury with the right motocross gear.

There are three essential pieces of motocross gear that you need to wear when riding. First, you’ll want a quality helmet, not a shoddy second hand helmet. If your helmet doesn’t come with a visor, then you’ll also want to purchase a sturdy pair of goggles to keep the dirt and debris out of your eyes. Second, you’ll want body armor for your chest, shoulders, and back. Third, you’ll need boots that fit properly and protect your feet.

Looking for a new hobby for your son or daughter?  Wanting something, though, that will teach them responsibility and teamwork, will help them to develop leadership skills and will make lifelong friendships?  If you’re close to Dayton, spend part of this coming weekend at the Nutter Center, 3640 Colonel Glenn Highway, for the best arenacross action of the year!  The pros will ride and race on Saturday evening at 7, and the amateur racers will take to the track on Sunday at 10.

Some of the best young people we’ve ever met race Motocross, they started as youngsters, and they’ve matured into what every parent hopes their kids will become.

Bret Michaels, rocker extraordinaire and supporter of motocross too, has joined forces with the American Motorcyclist Association to give this Rock Hard – Ride Hard Award to the rider this year who will be the “comeback” rider of the year in the Supercross season.  The winner of this award will be chosen by the rider’s rankings and by fan votes, and the prize to accompany this award will be both cash and a trophy.

Michaels knows that motocross includes crashes, and he understands the necessity to get back up all too often.  This award is about honoring the rider who gets back up the most, who overcomes the worst, who makes an amazing recovery.  And this award is, in part, being offered in honor of Michael who nearly died of a brain hemorrhage and stroke in 2010.

Best of luck, Bret, in your upcoming surgery and recovery.  And thanks for remembering motocross and supercross riders who give so much so that their fans are entertained!

The latest styles and colors of Motocross Gear and ATV riding and racing gear will be out in just a few weeks!  Look for Fox’s new motocross jerseys and pants, for new motocross boots and new ATV gear by all of your favorite manufacturers.  If you’re looking for a bargain, you can get last year’s model and color at discounted prices where still available, or you can buy the newest gear and be the first on the track with the 2011 models.

Every manufacturer builds into their new gear the safety features required by Snell and DOT, so take your pick – last year’s at a bargain price, or this year’s for the latest styles and colors.

The entire outdoor enthusiast world right now is focused on getting in “ski shape.”  For those who ski and ride, they know the benefits of being in “ski shape.”  And I applaud anyone who wants to get fit.  But if you ride Motocross, if you are off-road at all on a bike or an ATV, you might not be aware of the benefits of being in “Motocross shape.”

Motocross is a physically-demanding sport.  In addition to having all of the proper Motocross gear, you need to be in peak physical condition to be able to endure the beating off-road riding gives a rider.  You need stamina and energy, both of

which are increased when you work out regularly and stay in shape.  You need endurance and the ability to work through muscle fatigue, and lifting weights and getting in shape with cardio workouts will increase your endurance and help reduce muscle fatigue.

The best riders on the Motocross circuit stay in shape year-round.  They discipline their bodies and their minds to eat right, to work out regularly, and to get enough rest.  And they ride better because they are in “Motocross shape.”  Join a gym, run some stairs, pump some iron – do something besides being a couch potatoe!

The man, the machine and the jacket.  This is the vision that comes to mind when we think of leather motorcycle jackets. The jacket has always been considered an accessory to the motorcycle. It invokes such a masculine undertone even though we are aware the women also wear leather jackets.

Leather jackets need to be taken care of. Always check for the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning. Because it is made of natural tanned leather, a little wiping with a damp cloth moistened with a 50% vinegar and water solution, and occasional spot cleaning with a commercial leather cleaner/conditioner will keep it looking great. A leather cream applied twice a year will protect it from scratches. Don’t let it dry out and it will give you years of wear.
