Leather is durable – cows wear it out in the snow, wind, rain and sun for years!  It wears nearly as well once made into a jacket or a pair of pants for your bike!  But a few tips will help keep your leather in tip-top shape for many riding seasons.

First, clean your leather garments with water and a gentle soap only if really dirty.  In most cases leather can be dusted off, wiped down or rinsed with water alone.    Second, we recommend a leather conditioner at the beginning of and end of each riding season.  In the early spring, condition your leather pants with a leather conditioner.  This conditioner can also be used on your leather jacket, your motorcycle boots and your leather chaps. And before you spend a lot of money on an over-the-counter leather conditioner, try this simple, homemade leather conditioner.

Use one teaspoon of household ammonia, mixed with 4 teaspoons of white vinegar and 2 cups of water.  Mix well, and apply to your leather.  Test the leather first in an inside area so if the color changes at all, you will not ruin your garment.  Dry the mixture with a soft cloth, and then apply a small amount of castor oil with a clean, dry, soft cloth.

The producer and host of a new TV series, “Cafe Racer,” is Mike Seate.  Mike grew up in Wilkinsburg, PA,  and has been riding motorcycles since he was 15 years old.  After receiving his GED instead of a diploma from High School, Mike joined the Army, and he gave the Reserves six years.  Since his time in the Army, Mike has written for Pittsburgh-area publications and motorcycle magazines.    In addition to that, Mike has authored 13 books about motorcycles, so this is a guy who knows his stuff.

And Mike takes motorcycles very seriously.  As Cafe Racer begins, Mike has set the standard for safety gear.  In fact, everyone who appears on the show will be wearing motorcycle boots, a leather jacket, leather motorcycle gloves, leather pants, and a motorcycle helmet.  Mike doesn’t profit from the sale of motorcycle gear, but he knows from experience how the proper gear helps riders when they crash.  And Mike has crashed!  So tune in on Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. Pittsburgh time and catch “Cafe Racer.” It’s sure to be a hit for all who love motorcycles.
