With the explosion of interest in “retro” bikes, so too comes an interest in “retro” fashions.   “Retro” or “vintage” biker fashions available today include the first motorcycle jacket that was designed specifically for bikers.  And, of course, motorcycle leathers look retro.  You can buy leather pants, leather chaps, leather vests and jackets all in vintage style.

And they may look old and cool, but they are the smartest riding gear on the market still.  With the new “retro” look, however, the functionality is hidden better than ever, allowing riders to appear “retro” while being, in fact, safe.

If you’ve ever been caught in the rain on your bike, and you’ve been without leathers to keep you warm and dry, we suggest investing in this versatile, tough, yet stylish riding material.  Leather is simply the best at keeping you dry and warm.  And if you’ve been caught in the rain in your leathers, it is necessary to dry them out completely and to recondition them so they are ready for wear the next time you go out.

To dry your motorcycle leathers, hang them on a hanger, using clothespins where necessary, and let them drip dry without excessive heat.  In fact, if you can avoid blowing heat directly on the leather, it will help to protect your leather from drying out.  Leather can drip dry and then be reconditioned to soften it, which is much better than putting it in front of a heater or a dryer.  And reconditioning is necessary each time the leather is wet and then dries to help lengthen the life of your riding gear.

More and more people are turning to motorcycles for a cheaper mode of transportation and for a fun experience!  You can’t expect everyone on a bike these days to be a biker from the local bar, or a biker chick either!  Attorneys, doctors, professionals from all lines of work, as well as housewives are donning motorcycle leathers and hitting the streets!  They come from every walk of life, and they look good!  These aren’t just your biker leathers – they are classy, stylish, feminine leathers.  They coordinate with helmets and with bikes, and they offer the same great protection bikers and their ladies have always gotten from leather.  Ride on, all!

Head to toe, your body should be covered with leather or something stronger, such as Kevlar.  Most motorcycle injuries occur to the lower body as your legs and feet are exposed to the road surface in a crash, as well as to flying debris off of the road and snake bites.  Leather boots are a must, and the higher the boot top, the better.  Steel-toed boots are even better for protecting your vulnerable feet.  Motorcycle leathers includes pants and jackets as well.  In lieu of pants,  for cruising, you might opt for motorcycle chaps, but chaps are not acceptable for off-road or racing.

In choosing a jacket or pants, look for extra padding and protection of knees, hips, shoulders and elbows.  These joints are particularly vulnerable in a crash.  And last, but not least, leather gloves will protect your hands from severe road rash.  It’s a human tendency to try to catch ourselves with our hands, so they are at risk as well.  In choosing leather gloves, choose a pair that has extra padding in the palm of the glove and is made of strong, abrasion- resistant leather.
