President’s Weekend brought tragedy to an Arizona family who chose to allow children without helmets to ride an ATV with a grown-up.
Unfortunately, and very sadly, their 4-year-old son was run over when the grown-up lost control of the ATV, sustaining fatal head injuries. Motocross, ATVs, motorcycles – they’re all high-risk machines, high-risk sports, and to ride unprotected, or to let those you love ride unprotected, is simply foolish.
ATV helmets should be purchased new, not at a yard sale, not in a second-hand sports store, and they should fit the rider perfectly to provide the best protection. You can purchase an off-road helmet, like is used in Motocross, or you can use a cruising helmet, as long as it has a face shield, full head and ear coverage and a good chin strap.
Motocross isn’t a sport for the faint of heart. It’s listed with sky diving and scuba diving with sharks as an extreme sport. Participating in an extreme sport comes with a lot of risk. Lessen your odds of injury with the right motocross gear.
There are three essential pieces of motocross gear that you need to wear when riding. First, you’ll want a quality helmet, not a shoddy second hand helmet. If your helmet doesn’t come with a visor, then you’ll also want to purchase a sturdy pair of goggles to keep the dirt and debris out of your eyes. Second, you’ll want body armor for your chest, shoulders, and back. Third, you’ll need boots that fit properly and protect your feet.
Great Day, Inc., has in their new 2011 catalog an ATV accessory that you need if you use your ATV for hunting or ranch work. This ATV tray is
perfect for carrying firewood, hunting equipment or a cooler. It also is perfect for hauling fencing supplies, feed buckets and other ranching and farming tools and equipment.
It is made of aircraft aluminum, can hold up to 400 pounds without damaging the tray, and will fit onto any 2-inch hitch receiver.
One of the most important motorcycle accessories that you can purchase is eyewear – goggles or sunglasses.
And one of our favorite brands of sunglasses are Gatorz. As you can see, the lens colors and options vary as much as the frames do. And Gatorz builds into each pair of sunglasses they sell the best in UVA, UVB and UVC protection with their patented TruRay Optics. Customize your eyewear with the best visual performance and safety available, and comfort that is second to none. Choose a frame, choose a lens that fits your need, choose the color you prefer, and start today riding in the same eyewear that the Orange County Choppers, Guy Fieri and others wear!
Wearing the proper riding gear when you’re out on your motorcycle is crucial because you are so exposed to the elements. Having a sturdy pair of well-fitting motorcycle boots is an important part of your riding outfit. I have long been a fan of AlpineStars motorcycle boots and recently purchased a pair of AlpineStars Tech Touring Gore-Tex boots.
What I love about these motorcycle boots is that they are made with full-grain leather (have to keep up the biker chic look) covered with Gore-Tex membrane which makes the boots 100 percent waterproof. The insteps and heels are flex zones which gives me more freedom moving my foot. The ankles have full double-density injected into the inner structure of the boots to give additional support. Best of all, I know that my feet won’t slip because AlpineStars uses stretch paneling fitted to zip openings for a tight, adaptable fit.
Whether you ride a motorcycle or an ATV, whether you ride on or off road, and whether you ride for pleasure or you race, Gaerne makes the best motorcycle boots in the industry. From the top of the boot, clear down through the sole, Gaerne makes their boots from the best raw materials available. Their off-road boots incorporate Gaerne’s unique, patented floating system which provides the ankle with maximum support and comfort. They use molded, injected shin guards, and buckles and hinges made from aluminum.
For their cruising boots, Gaerne uses top grain leather and internal support of the shin and ankle for comfort on long
rides. They increase your safety on the bike by adding a reflective strip on the rear of the boot’s heel and anti-slip rubber soles to maximize grip and traction. Simply stated, Gaerne makes the best boots on the market, whether you ride on or off road.

Entry level, yes; but Shoei quality too! The 2011 Qwest helmet from Shoei is available in three new designs, the Sprite, the Bloodflow and the Airfoil. What sets the Qwest apart from other Shoei helmets is the quietness of the ride – up to 60% quieter than the helmet it replaces in Shoei’s line. All that, and the Qwest includes the patented Shoei visor system found on their top-of-the-line models.
The Qwest’s design improves aerodynamics, which reduces noise. The Qwest comes in seven helmet sizes and four different shell sizes, sure to fit every rider. Weighing in at just under 1400 grams for a medium size, this helmet reduces neck strain. And the Qwest boasts the latest Shoei technology in ventilation, with lower air intakes and larger top vents all repositioned, and two new rear vents to expel hot air.
Test the Qwest today – a better entry-level helmet you’ll not find!
Attention sports and touring riders! Shoei has developed the XR1100 just for you. With eight new graphics patterns, you’re sure to find one you love. And the XR1100 sports a new visor mechanism that is “wind-free” due to the self-adjusting suction seal. The Shoei visor system provides a wider vision field with maximum clarity in all weather conditions.
Shoei has always focused on rider safety and rider comfort, and the XR1100 is no exception. Shoei has redesigned the ventilation system to include a negative pressure feature with extraction technology which guarantees the explusion of warm air, regardless of the speed.
